There's a reason why it's called "foundation". The first step to achieving flawless makeup begins with evening out your skin tone with the help of this makeup product.
Foundations come in a gamut of textures - from liquid to cream to mineral powder. It takes a bit of time to fully understand which one is right for you. Speaking from experience (and from clearing out one too many drawers full of the wrong foundation) we can safely assure you that it's ok to have more than one foundation in your arsenal. Depending on the occasion, the weather and the condition of your skin you can choose from a variety of textures to always have you "best face forward" no matter what comes your way!
Here’s our handy guide on what you need to know know about the coverage, finish and skin care benefits of different types of foundation, from sheer and natural to full-coverage cream textures.
This is the most versatile of all foundations and works across all skin types. Since liquid foundations spread easily a little bit goes a long way. Apply a thin layer for a sheer finish and then build up if you want higher coverage.
Liquid foundations come in a variety of finishes from matte to satin or dewey. Can be applied with a brush and then blended with your finger tips or a sponge blender.
Our pick: L'Oreal Paris Infallible 24h Foundation INR 1400/-
Cream foundations come in either a stick form or in a compact. They give medium to full coverage and are great for mature skins as the slightly thicker texture ensures that the foundation doesn't settle into and accentuate fine lines.
Stick foundations need to be further applied or blended with a brush or a sponge blender. Both sticks and compacts are great for travel as they are spill proof.
Our pick: Deborah New Skin Compact Foundation INR 1150/- or Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick INR 4100/-
Powder foundations are perfect for oily skins since the powder texture helps to keep shine at bay. They give a natural light weight coverage and are meant to be gently pressed onto the skin. Available in both pressed and loose powder form, they are also great for layering over other foundation formulas or for touch ups on the go.
Our Pick: NYX Professional Makeup Stay Matte But Not Flat Powder Foundation INR 900/-
CUSHION COMPACT FOUNDATION:
The newest kid on the block, cushion compacts were first introduced by Korean makeup brands, but are now fairly main stream and available across all price spectrums. A cushion compact is basically a sponge soaked in fluid foundation and then inserted into a compact. This fluid foundation is normally thinner than a liquid foundation and is applied using an applicator sponge. Just press the applicator into the soaked sponge in order to release the fluid which can then be applied or patted on. If gives a naturally radiant finish and can also be built up from a thin layer to higher coverage. Most cushion foundations have higher spf levels and anti oxidants in them which make them a great option for you. Having said that, do NOT skip using your sun protection just because your cushion foundation gives you some sun protection (but you knew that, right?)
Our pick: Innisfree Long Wear Cover Cushion INR 900/- and Lancome Miracle Cushion Foundation INR 5600/-
So how many foundations should you have in your beauty kit?
This is a question we get asked a lot!
A lot depends on your lifestyle, the weather you face as well as the condition of your skin.
If you face 4 distinct seasons with varying temperatures your summer time foundation will probably be too light weight and not moisturising enough during the cooler days of winter. If you need higher coverage during the evening then your daytime stick foundation may need to be replaced by a liquid foundation at night.
Just like you build a wardrobe of different denims for different occasions, you can add a few different options to your foundation collection as well.
Don't be afraid to experiment and to shop around. If you get lucky, you may just find that one perfect foundation that gives you a sheer, more natural look as well as builds up to a more polished, higher coverage look when needed.
One foundation or several - either way, we won't judge you :-)
