The MSM guide to coloured hair, and how to keep them looking gorgeous longer:
1) Don't wash before your colour appointment.
Make sure to keep a minimum of 48 hours between your last wash and your colour appointment. So called "dirty" hair has natural oils which protect your scalp and hair shaft. Also - surprisingly - colour seems to adhere better to dirty hair.
2) Delay that first wash post colouring.
Try and wait a few days after your colour to wash your hair. Another recommendation for coloured hair is to limit your shampoo sessions to 2-3 times a week. If your lifestyle compels you to wash your hair more frequently, try using a dry shampoo in between those shower sessions.
3) Use the right shampoo for the job.
4) Water can make or break your hair colour.
Rinse with lukewarm or cool water as hot water damages and strips colour away from your hair. If you are a water baby make sure you protect your hair from chlorine in the swimming pool. (MSM tip: wet and condition your hair, then don a tight fitting swim cap before taking that plunge. Rinse out the conditioner post swim)
5) Pamper your hair with a deep conditioning mask.
Treat your hair to a deep conditioning mask every week - home made or splurge with a salon treatment.
6) Save your hair from extreme heat.
And we don't just mean from the sun! Let your hair dry naturally without subjecting it to the blast from a hair dryer.
7) Extend your colour with these DIY rinses.
These home made rinses are a great way to extend your colour. They coat the cuticle, enhance the colour and give you great highlights. They also condition your hair beautifully.
Dark/ Brunette Hair: Brew a cup of coffee (1 cup of water per tablespoon of coffee is the ideal ratio). Let cool and add a tablespoon of olive or coconut oil for increased conditioning. Apply with spray bottle on lengths of hair, cover with shower cap and rinse off after half an hour. Skip the shampoo (the added oil will probably mean you will not need to condition either)
For highlighted/ blonde hair: Add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice to a cup of cooled chamomile tea. Rinse your hair with this and let dry naturally for gradual and natural highlights.
