Working out is great for your skin. While you sweat, your body blasts impurities from your skin. Moreover, sweat protects your skin from nasty bacteria such as E. Coli and Staphylococcus aureus by releasing Dercidin, a natural antibiotic—neat, right?
Add these 10 beauty products to your skincare routine to ensure you’re getting the most out of your bacteria-free, post-gym skin.
01 Makeup wipes
If there’s one time to go bare, it’s the gym. Never, and we mean never, workout with makeup on. Wear makeup while you work out and expect blackheads, pimples, and a dull skin tone to follow.
Once you’ve taken off your makeup, follow-up with a light moisturiser and - if you are working out outdoors - a sunscreen
You’ve heard it before, and you’ll hear it again: Healthy skin starts from within. Ensure you’re staying hydrated through the day and during your workout to keep your skin in top shape.
03 Shampoo (or dry shampoo)
Post-gym showering has to be quick and efficient. Especially if you’re a morning gym person. See if you can find a travel-sized bottle of your favourite shampoo and conditioner combo, or if you’re pressed for time, spritz a little dry shampoo through your scalp, massage it in and you’re good to go.
You know you're going to need it! If you can have a shower BEFORE you workout as well as after. If that is not an option, please be considerate to your fellow sufferers at the gym and invest in a good odour control deodorant
05 Facial cleanser
Once you’ve finished your workout, if you have time for nothing else, be sure to at least wash your face and follow up with a mosituriser (even if you don’t have dry skin). What washing your face does, is ensure that any grime that collected on your skin while you were working out doesn’t sit on it or get trapped into your skin after your workout.
06 Foundation and sunscreen
Sunscreen is an absolute must. Even if you work indoors and only spend a minute a day outside and it’s overcast, you still need sunscreen. Look out for a face-only formula--these tend to be lighter and are specifically designed for the face.
If you’re looking to save time and space, however, try a foundation with an inbuilt SPF. Because, quite frankly, after a 6 AM yoga class, ain’t no body got time fo’ that.
You know what they say about eyes being the windows to one’s soul right? Well, it’s true. And you know what all windows need? Eyebrows and lashes. Run a few coats of mascara through your lashes to keep your peepers looking pretty.
08 Eyebrow pencil
Eyebrows frame the face: They add angles, and lines, and curves. Pencil in sparse areas post-workout, and keep them groomed and you’ll have one heck of a pretty mug.
09 Lip and cheek stain
Two-for-one products aren’t just a good bang for your buck, they’re also convenient. Swipe some natural, workplace-appropriate lip stain across your lips, and dab a few dots on the apples of your cheeks and you’ll be good to go.
Use travel-sized versions of your favourite perfumes and eau de toilettes to give yourself that extra-fresh scent. But don’t overdo it--there’s a slang term called a “French bath,” meaning “someone who bathes in perfume.” A dab on your pulse points and you should be good to go.
