If the thought of castor oil as a beauty ingredient for skin and hair has you wide eyed in surprise, then you need to read below to better understand why we love it so!
WHAT IS CASTOR OIL
Castor oil is a colourless to pale yellow liquid, made by pressing the seeds of the castor plant. It has a very distinctive smell as well as taste, and for some of us who were force fed this as a child, the associations with castor oil are definitely not very pleasant!
WHAT IS SO EXCEPTIONAL ABOUT CASTOR OIL
Castor oil has natural antibacterial and anti-fungal properties and is high in Vitamin E, minerals, proteins as well as Omega 6 and 9 beneficial fatty acids. Its unusually high ricinoleic acid ratio makes it beneficial for both skin and hair.
CASTOR OIL FOR SKIN
Castor oil has wonderful emollient and moisturizing properties. Due to its thicker consistency, apply it in small quantities to especially dry areas of the skin such as heels, elbows and knees and massage in to the skin till completely absorbed.
You can also blend it with a lighter oil like virgin coconut oil, and use the blend as application for the entire body.
CASTOR OIL FOR HAIR
Mix castor oil with jojoba, argan, coconut or olive oil in a 3:1 ratio and apply at the roots of damp (not wet) hair. Gently massage into your scalp, focusing on areas that need the most attention. Wash off after a few hours.
CASTOR OIL FOR LASHES AND EYEBROWS
Apply a small amount of castor oil every night on your eyebrows using an ear bud. It also helps with eye lash growth - but do be careful as the oil can sting your eyes!
CASTOR OIL AS A CLEANSER
Make your own home made oil cleanser blend and throw away all your commercial cleansers! Mix castor oil with olive oil or sunflower oil (proportions are different depending on your skin type as explained below); massage onto dry skin for 2 minutes till the oil has totally saturated your skin. Then apply a wrung out warm towel to your face and wipe clean. You will be amazed at how clean and at the same time moisturised your skin feels!
For normal skin, use a 50-50 blend of castor and carrier oil
For dry skin use 1/3 castor oil and 2/3 carrier oil
For oily skin, flip the ratio and use 2/3 castor oil and 1/3 carrier oil
