Did you know May 2nd is recognised as Scurvy Awareness Day? Did you also know that scurvy is called "Pirate's Disease" cause apparently they didn't get access to enough Vitamin C while offshore?
Now as much as you fantasize about hanging out with Captain Jack Sparrow, lack of Vitamin C is not good for you! Sorry to rain on your p-Arr-ade - but we are here to tell you all about one big source of Vitamin C that is out there - Lemons!
Read on to know what to do when life throws lemons at you:
- LIGHTEN ACNE SCARS
We swear to god that acne is the most annoying thing in the world. Even after it leaves, it doesn't!
The best way to lighten stubborn acne scars is to apply fresh lemon juice directly on to them. The natural bleaching properties of lemon lighten acne scars. Make sure you only apply lemon juice for a maximum of 10-15 minutes and then wash it off. Remember to moisturise after washing off as citric acid in the lemon can be drying to the skin.
- WHITEN YOUR TEETH
Embarrassed to smile at the cutie because you're conscious of your yellowing teeth? Mix baking soda with lemon juice to form a paste. Use a toothbrush to rub this paste onto your teeth for a minute and then rinse off. We guarantee you will love showing off your pearly whites very soon thereafter.
- BRIGHTEN NAILS
If you're a nail polish addict like us, you will be all too familiar with this problem. Winter's dark nail paints can leave you with yellow looking nails. Time to whip out the baking soda-lemon juice paste you used to whiten your teeth just before! Apply this paste to your nails and let it sit for a few minutes. Rinse off with warm water and buff your nails lightly. Repeat as often as necessary for brighter, prettier nails.
- MAKE YOUR OWN LEMON-SUGAR BODY SCRUB
We swear by this amazing body scrub. Add one and a half tablespoon of sugar to every one tablespoon of lemon to make a thick paste. Head to the shower, and rub yourself all over with this DIY body scrub.
Trust us, you'll walk out feeling like a goddess with baby soft skin!

- DIY COLD BODY WAX
This one's new! For all of you who are allergic to regular body wax or are scared of the heat, this DIY cold body wax works wonders. Firstly, it removes all of your unwanted hair, plus the lemon brightens your skin! Here's how to make this at home:
- Mix one part water to two parts sugar and a splash of lemon juice in a small saucepan.
- Let it simmer until the sugar dissolves and the liquid turns into a light brown colour.
- Take the mixture off and allow it to cool.
- Once it reaches room temperature it is ready to be used as your own DIY cold body wax
- INDULGE IN A LEMON FOOT SOAK
Summers are here and your feet are going to be exposed to the elements in open toe sandals and flip flops.
Get your tootsies ready for summer with this easy DIY foot soak.
Add the juice of one lemon, 1/2 a cup of sea-salt and 2 tablespoon ground ginger to a tub of warm water. Relax and soak your feet (up to the ankles) for 20 minutes.
- RINSE & LIGHTEN YOUR HAIR
Add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice to 1/2 cup of water and rinse for shinier hair. The lemon gets rid of any dullness caused by soap residue or hard water. Plus it's a great way to lighten your hair naturally without those nasty chemicals. Just rinse your hair with the lemon mix and sun dry your hair for gradual and natural highlights!
