Admit it, summer is the season you get fit for. All those short skirts and cropped tops and floaty fabrics mean that you need to knock off the flab and keep those muscles toned. Here are some great tips to help you stay motivated and fit.
1) Work out in the mornings!
This is the coolest time of the day and also - physiologically speaking - the most effective exercise time if you wish to burn fat.
Walk the dog, or just yourself. Go for a swim or meet up with a pal to go for a run. A morning workout kickstarts your metabolism and sets the tone for the rest of your day.
2) Stay hydrated - but with the right stuff!
Junk those sugary sports drinks. Make yourself a tasty drink with water, mint and a squeeze of fresh lemon or any other citrusy fruit. Up your hydration if you are exercising outdoors and sweating excessively.
Sweating causes you to lose salts and can lead to cramping. Add a pinch of salt to your water based drink and keep sipping.
3) Don't confuse thirst with hunger!
This is super common during warmer months when we dehydrate before we know it. The same part of your brain is responsible for signalling hunger as well as thirst so it is easy to confuse one for the other. To test yourself, just try taking a drink of water and wait 15 minutes to see if the sensation of hunger passes.
4) Start an affair with Yoga!
The best thing about yoga is that you can do it just about anywhere and at any given time of day. It can help you relax, calm you down or pump you up depending on the practice you follow and the asanas you choose.
If you have never practiced yoga before the summer is a great time to begin because warmer weather keeps you more limber and flexible.
5) Eat Right! Dress Right!
Eat foods that hydrate - think watermelon, salads, coconut water, buttermilk... your skin and hair will thank you for it! An occasional ice cream is totally acceptable but balance it out with healthy and tasty meals. Think orange and yellow when you eat in the summer, and avoid fried foods.
Be smart about what you wear to workout in. Wear comfortable clothing with moisture wicking properties so your skin stays dry, helping you to work out longer. Make sure you go sports shoe shopping in the afternoon when you are feet are at their widest (remember feet tend to swell as the daytime temperatures go up) This ensures the right fit for when you work out as well.
That's all for now, gorgeous. Stay tuned for some more tips from the MSM Squad on summer and your fitness goals!
