Here are the 5 things you need to know about eye creams - this includes understanding why they are worth the investment, when to start using them and how to choose the right one for you.
WHY USE AN EYE CREAM -
The skin around your eyes is thinner than that on the rest of your face and also has fewer oil glands. This is why this is the first part of your face to betray signs of fatigue, aging and stress.
WHEN SHOULD I START USING AN EYE CREAM -
If you are younger than 25, chances are you haven't even given eye creams a thought while shopping for your skincare "wardrobe".
Our beauty squad recommends that you start in your twenties - you will be happy you did once the rest of your anti-aging concerns start to appear! Keep in mind that the wear and tear associated with smiling, squinting first start to show around your eyes, hence you need to start with a light weight eye cream as early as your twenties.
CAN I USE MOISTURISER INSTEAD OF AN EYE CREAM AROUND MY EYES?
As we mentioned earlier, thinner skin around the eyes means that regular moisturisers may be too heavy or greasy for use. Also skin around the eye area is more sensitive so eye creams are specially formulated to avoid triggering any irritation.
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO APPLY EYE CREAM?
Take a small (pea sized amount) of product and apply it gently on the skin below the eyes, starting from the inner corner and moving towards the outer corner. Apply it in dots along the orbital bone (not very close to the eye itself)
Do not pull or tug at the sensitive area around your eyes
Apply leftover cream along the upper eyelid as well.

OTHER HELPFUL HABITS FOR YOUNGER LOOKING EYES:
A good eye cream is definitely an asset and one that must be part of your daily skincare regime. However here are some simple lifestyle related habits which are important to keep in mind as well.
- Keep your sunnies handy while heading out so as to reduce squinting against the glare of the sun. This helps slow down the formation of fine lines and crows feet
- Thoroughly remove eye makeup before going to bed. This will keep you from waking up to puffy or irritated eyes!
- Avoid excessive alcohol or very salted foods at night; this again can trigger puffy eyes
