The common skin types are:

  • Normal Skin: This type of skin does not feel flaky or oily. There are no visible signs of breakouts or appearance of large pores, and the skin looks naturally radiant. If this is your skin type, then all we can say is lucky you!
  • Oily Skin: This type of skin tends to be shiny and is prone to acne or pimples. The pores are clogged due to excess secretion of oil and skin appears visibly irritated.
  • Dry Skin: This skin type is the exact opposite of oily skin but has its own challenges. It can get flaky and rough and feels tight after washing. It also easily develop wrinkles. Dry skin needs to be well moisturised morning and night.
  • Combination Skin: This skin type is the trickiest of all. It’s a mixture of both oily and dry skin. The T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) is quite shiny and greasy  whereas the cheeks are dry. Combination skin is prone to frequent breakouts and has large visible pores.
  • Sensitive Skin: This skin type is the trickiest and needs special care products. It get patchy and is easily burnt if exposed to the sun.  Always looks for sensitive skin products or consult a dermatologist for product recommendation.

So, how will you determine your skin type?

Here are 2 simple ways that will help you in this quest.

Test 1: See and Feel Your Skin

This test lets you see how your skin feels during the day post cleansing and moisturising. If after a day’s work you do not find much change in the look and the feel of your skin, then you have normal skin. However, if around mid-day you find your skin looking shiny and greasy all over, then you are an oily skin type. In case you find your skin is sticky/oil only along the T-zone area and your cheeks dry, then you have combination skin. If your face feels rough and streched throughout the day, even after the application of moisturizer, then you have dry skin. Lastly, if your skin feels dry, irritated and appears red, then you have sensitive skin.

Test 2: After Cleansing Patch Test

This is a super easy and quick way to determine your skin type. Cleanse your skin with a mild cleanser, pat dry and leave it for 30 minutes without applying any skincare product.  After 30 minutes take a dry cotton cloth or a tissue and cover the face. If the tissue ends up catching grease  on the face, then you have oily skin. In case, only the portion that touched the T-zone gets oil stain then you have combination skin. If the tissue is not stained and skin is feeling stretched and dry then you have dry skin. In the scenario that your face looks clean but blotchy or irritated along with the appearance of red patches, then you have  sensitive skin. If your face looks radiant and feels fresh then you have normal skin.

If you continue to have doubts regarding your skin type even after trying either or both tests, we advise that you take a dermatologists help.

So, what is YOUR skin type? How old were you when you first determined your skin type?
